Prior to his retirement in 2002, Tom was a senior member of the faculty of IPST and he served as Director of CPBIS from its inception in 2000 until May, 2003. He earned the Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering at the University of Toronto and spent ten years doing research in the paper and allied industries before joining IPST in 1978. While at IPST, he directed research in the science and technology of pulp manufacture, with emphasis on the technology, chemistry, kinetics and environmental implications of pulping and bleaching processes.

He has taught courses in chemical reaction engineering, experimental design, and bleaching technology, and has directed the research of a large number of Ph.D. and M.S. students. He has authored or co-authored numerous publications, patents and book chapters, including approximately 45 refereed journal articles and book chapters. He has been the recipient of several industry honors and awards, including the University of Toronto 's Erco Summer Research Fellowship and the Canadian Pulp and Paper Association's C. Howard Smith Medal and Award.

Dr. McDonough has served as Associate Scientific Editor for the Journal of Pulp and Paper Science, Program Chairman for the 1996 International Pulp Bleaching Conference and Conference Chairman for the 1998 International Pulp Bleaching Conference. He received the Technical Award and Johan C.F.C. Richter Prize of the Pulp Manufacture Division of the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry (TAPPI) in 1996 and was named a TAPPI Fellow, also in 1996. He continues to be affiliated with CPBIS on a part-time basis.
